`...he is a Renaissances man who paved the way for many of the country’s most important cultural changes, and who continues to create in the fields of literature, art, music, and television. Just as it’s impossible to map out the correct path for developing a new culture, it’s difficult to judge such a major personality as Makarevich.` Peter Vail

Andrey Marakevich is not just an artist, poet or musician, he is a Russian cultural phenomenon who blazed a trail through two historical epochs, spanning from the Soviet 1970s through to the present day. He created the Rock band Mashina Vremeni (Time Mashine) in 1970, which spawned the development of Rock Music in the Soviet Union. His songs inspired the generation that helped dismantle the Soviet Communist system of government and went on to create the new society of present day Russia. While in Soviet times Makarevich was seen as a counter culture icon, recently some critics have accused him of cashing in on Russia’s changes. For others, `he is a Renaissances man who paved the way for many of the country’s most important cultural changes, and who continues to create in the fields of literature, art, music, and television. Just as it’s impossible to map out the correct path for developing a new culture, it’s difficult to judge such a major personality as Makarevich.`

The displayed art shows only one side of Makarevich’s work. As an artist, he uses his strong eye and sensual hand in creating prints and works on paper. His watercolors and monotypes of animals are executed in a manner that mixes Asian sensibility with Russian folklore and icon imagery. His fluid and unconstrained brushstrokes echo the teaching of the Chinese school of painting with their emphasis on the discovery of the essence of things. While the portraits of women reflect the spirituality of icon images. The drawings of fish show his ability as a keen draftsman and at the same time bring out characteristics of creatures with individuality and human spirit reminiscent of the works of 19th century Russian Fairy Tale illustrators.
